About the June 5th Memorial Sculpture
"Witness"
Written by Artist, Barb Fox.
The title of the memorial sculpture is “Witness.” The word “witness” can be interpreted on several levels. I thought about how the six glass windows and the seventh open window in the central stone would look outward onto the city of Philadelphia. Simultaneously, we, as viewers, can see through the glass windows and actually, or symbolically, witness events that are happening, have happened, or will happen on the site. The history of this tragedy, like the glass, needs to be transparent so it will never be repeated. We “bear witness” by acknowledging the facts of the tragedy that occurred here, and remembering those who lost their lives.
